Champion was the first Campanula medium to reliably behave like an annual (although the rest of its species are biennial). People have trouble with this crop because it has a strong day length response. Below 12 hours of daylight it remains vegetative, and above 12 hours it initiates bud, regardless of how established it is. (Hence the talk of it flowering in the plug tray, or on 2" stems when planted too late in the season). Early planting is recommended to let it establish before natural day length triggers flowering. It would be worth experimenting with blackout fabric to provide long nights (thus short days) until the plant has bulked up enough to support long stem growth. This crop would be best grow in the tunnel for northern growers, as your ground may otherwise be frozen at the ideal planting time.

Champion II is replacing the original Champion. We have some of each listed here. Once Champion is gone we don't expect any more as it has been discontinued. Champion II is more uniform and is being devloped in a wider range of colors.

Best results will occur if planted between weeks 40 in the fall and 10 in the spring. Plant under short day conditions.

Many folks succeed with a fall transplant in mild winter areas, or northern areas with good snow cover.

Champion and Champion II have larger flowers than Champion Pro. All are desirable and long lasting. Cut in bud, just before opening. Bred by Sakata.

Grown in a 216 tray, billed as a 210.

Order 7 or more weeks in advance of desired ship date.

Plugs will be 6-7 weeks old upon arrival.

For tough chewers
This is great for my large puppy. It has taken a beating, and I trim off any hanging or loose pieces of rubber. It has survived the test of time.

We call it the brick.
Great chew toy. Not really made for playing fetch. It’s large and very heavy. Good construction.
